Nina Roberts Ph.D
Opening Keynote Address

Dr. Nina S. Roberts is a dynamic educator and respected leader, having successfully blended her passion for outdoor recreation and issues of race, class, and gender into a crucial field of expertise. She will provide examples of the changing demographics occurring throughout the ACA Mid States Region and the nation. Consequently, she will share her insights along with sample resources for effectively responding to these inevitable cultural shifts. Dr. Roberts is nationally known for her research in race/ethnicity and culture regarding recreational use and constraints to visiting parks and public lands. She also continues to explore youth development in relation to social trends and the connection to nature and experiential learning. Dr. Roberts is a visionary with immense energy and an unwavering commitment to increasing opportunities for youth across cultures. This includes encouraging honest dialogue amidst occasionally difficult conversations. Essential to the future well-being of camps and camping, broadly, this promises to be a dynamic session including a holistic view of diversity and youth outdoors.
About the Speaker
Dr. Nina Roberts is an Associate Professor at San Francisco State University and Director of the Pacific Leadership Institute. Her expertise includes outdoor recreation, parks management, urban programming, and youth development. Nina is nationally recognized for her research regarding race/ethnicity, culture and visitation to parks and public lands. Nina spent 25 yrs in the field prior to SFSU including with the Student Conservation Association and National Park Service. A Fulbright scholar, Nina has been honored for her commitment to diversity and social justice as she seeks to break down barriers of inequity. She’s a former board member of Yosemite Institute and currently serves on the Advisory Council for GirlVentures and the Center for Diversity and the Environment.

The opportunity has never been greater and it’s here, right now. This century poses new challenges to our children and their parents and camp has a unique power to meet their needs. In this keynote, delivered with Michael’s trademark enthusiasm and “use-it-immediately” practicality, we’ll see what researchers, youth development experts, and employers note as most important for the success of young people in a fast-changing world and how we can use camp in even stronger ways to support that success. About the Speaker
Michael Brandwein (michaelbrandwein.com) is one of the top trainers of persons in the fields of camp, recreation, and education. He has made presentations in all 50 states and on six of the seven continents. Michael is the number one national bestselling author in the camp field, with five consecutive bestsellers, Training Terrific Staff (Volumes 1 & 2), Super Staff SuperVision, Learning Leadership, and his latest, Skill of the Day: What Great Leaders of Young People Do and Say. Michael wrote and presented three 1999 Emmy â award-winning television programs on communicating with children. He is a frequent keynote speaker for national organizations that serve youth, families, teachers, and others, including the American Camp Association (ACA) and the National Recreation and Park Association, among many others. He has served on the national board of directors and executive committee of the ACA and has received two national honors from ACA for his training of directors and staff throughout the world. Michael’s camp experience includes everything from front-line counselor and supervisor to camp administrator. His Juris Doctor degree is from the University of Chicago. Michael lives in the Chicago area with his wife Donna and their two sons David and Benjamin.
